Jakarta,OpsJurnal.Asia -
The high number of non-procedural (illegal) migrant workers from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has become a serious concern for various stakeholders. In response to this issue, Yayasan Effata Kupang organized a strategic socialization program in collaboration with BP3MI NTT (Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers), on Wednesday (26/02).
The event, which took place in a warm yet substantive atmosphere, was attended by the Chairperson of Yayasan Effata Kupang along with representatives from its educational units. The presence of the Head of BP3MI NTT, Suratmi Hamida, underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in providing comprehensive protection for NTT residents working abroad.
Real Challenges in NTT
During the forum, several data points highlighting employment conditions in NTT were presented, including:
One of the largest contributors of non-procedural migrant workers: Many residents choose illegal channels due to limited information literacy and the influence of illegal recruiters (brokers).
High rate of educated unemployment: Approximately 94,000 university graduates in NTT have yet to secure employment.
Anticipating the impact of P3K policy adjustments: The potential downsizing of P3K (government contract employees) requires alternative legal and protected overseas career pathways.
The session was delivered by Riany Kristiana Karim, who emphasized that working abroad is every citizen’s right, but it must be pursued through official procedures to ensure legal protection.
“We want to change the stigma. Working abroad is something to be proud of, as long as it is done through official channels. In that way, the state is present to provide protection from start to finish,” Riany stated during her presentation.
Commitment to Education and Protection
Through this initiative, Yayasan Effata Kupang affirmed its commitment to serving as an information hub (Migrant Center) for alumni, staff, and the wider community. The goal is to prevent illegal recruitment practices and equip human resources with global skills and mindset, enabling them to compete legally and with dignity.
The collaboration between educational institutions and BP3MI is expected to serve as a sustainable preventive measure in reducing the number of illegal migrant workers, while strengthening the protection of Indonesian migrant workers’ rights, particularly those from NTT.
